You’ve got the goods for the grill and the drinks prepped, and you have the fireworks show covered. However, your Fourth of July barbecue guests need some other forms of entertainment before it gets dark enough for the real show. Here are 10 great lawn games to liven up your Fourth of July party before the fireworks.

  1. Bocce ball: This game involves a small ball called a pallino ball, and team members try to get their bocce balls closest to the pallino ball. There are two teams, and points are earned by getting balls closest to the pallino ball without any opposing team’s balls being closer. This makes for some nice competition.
  2. Lawn Bowling: Sometimes bringing an indoor game to the outdoors is all it takes to renew it, and lawn bowling is no exception. If you get a wooden set, you’ll add a vintage effect.
  3. Giant games: If bringing it outdoors isn’t enough, make it giant. There are giant checkers and Jenga games that make life-size fun out of table size games.
  4. Cornhole: Bean bag tosses are run-of-the-mill, but make it into a cornhole game, and you’ve got something that all ages will enjoy. Beware though. There are some serious cornhole enthusiasts.
  5. Ladder toss: Ladder toss is a pretty simple game of tossing two balls attached by rope onto a ladder, and points vary based on which rung you wrap around. This game is challenging, but at the same token, your toddler has a good chance of beating you.
  6. Croquet: Croquet is a game people don’t play as much as they used to, but it is a fun and competitive game kind of like Bocce but with balls, mallets, and wickets.
  7. Badminton: Nearly any yard is big enough for a badminton net, and this game is like a combination of volleyball and tennis. You hit a “birdie” back and forth over a net with a racquet, and the general idea is very much like volleyball.
  8. Horseshoes: Even if you don’t have a horseshoe pit, there are yard-friendly, plastic versions of this game that the whole family will enjoy.
  9. Lawn darts: Some games are dangerous, and lawn darts was one of them. It involved launching spear-headed darts into the grass target, and some people were hurt. The game was discontinued, but it has re-emerged in a spear-free version that is safe and just as fun.
  10. Washer toss: If your guests want a less active form of entertainment, washer toss is a great game that can be played from the comfort of a lawn chair. Your guests don’t have to get hot out in the sun playing outdoor games, and washer toss is one way to keep the fun going.

Lawn Games and Your Lawn

Your lawn will take a beating during your Fourth of July gathering, but the fun will be worth it. In order to reduce damage, try to make sure your grass is as healthy as possible prior to the event, and give it a break after the event.
