1. Keep a noise maker in your yard.

This might not sound like something you want to do, but it doesn’t have to be anything that loud. Simply installing a flagpole and hanging a flag can be a great deterrent for deer. The flapping of the flag can scare them off. You can also try turning a radio on at night or the times when you are seeing the most deer activity. Plug it in on your deck or patio and set it loud enough that it may frighten deer but you don’t keep yourself or your neighbors up!

2. Keep their favorite meals closest to the house.

This is a good idea because the deer have to be very hungry or brave to come right up to the house and prevent them from eating these plants simply because of the vicinity. Another reason it is a good idea to keep these plants close is that they are easy to check on frequently and make sure that it isn’t being snacked on. Deer tend to like plants that are smooth and flavorful, like your pretty roses. Not all deer have the same palate, so keep that in mind and watch your plants to see what the deer bothering your yard like.

3. Buy or make a homemade deer repellant.

There are many commercial sprays that you can get and use for your yard and plants that are made to keep deer away from your plants. You can also try making your own repellant from household items. Soap-spray, hot peppers, or sprays made with hot peppers can quickly dissuade a deer from continuing to dine on your landscaping.

4. Build fences that deer can’t get through.

Deer are excellent jumpers, so remember to build your fence to at least 8 feet tall. This can be one of the most effective ways to protect your plants, particularly a vegetable garden. Make sure that your fence is not only tall enough, but that it also extends underground some to prevent the deer from trying to squeeze underneath.

5. Plant unappealing meals.

Deer don’t like all plants, although they will probably try pretty much any plant. A deer’s sense of smell can be used to deter them from continuing to look through your garden. Try planting heavily aromatic herbs and plant like lavender, mint, or even chives throughout the plants you are trying to protect.

6. Apply Milorganite

Research conducted at the University of Georgia suggests that Milorganite is a useful tool in repelling deer from grazing on food plots and ornamental plantings. Research indicates Milorganite's odor is effective in keeping deer from browsing plantings up to 5 weeks. Spread Milorganite around your plantings to deter deer. The study used an application rate of one half cup per plant and concluded that reduction of plant damage may improve if Milorganite is reapplied at day 14.
