Your walk-behind mower is typically considered a complete power tool, meaning it doesn’t typically need accessories. However, there are accessories available to give you the optimal mowing experience.

1. Bag: Generally speaking, the bag that fits your mower matches a certain brand name, and there aren’t a lot of alternatives. However, a bag for your mower may need to be replaced once it wears out, or you may want an extra bag. An extra bag will help in situations where one has to mow far away from a dumping site, so a job can be completed without making two trips to dump the bag. You may want to invest in a riding lawn mower if you are doing large jobs like this, but an extra bag can help.

2. Striper: We’ve all seen perfectly-manicured lawns with straight, alternating stripes of light and dark green. Lawn mowing aficionados achieve these stripes with the help of a striping kit. A striping kit is installed to run behind your mower, and it presses blades in alternating directions depending on which direction you are travelling.

3. Blade: There are mulching blade kits available for some mowers, but simply having an extra blade can really be a lifesaver should one of your blades break or become dull. If you have an extra lawnmower blade, you can always keep one sharp for quick and easy switches when needed.

4. Cover: Just like barbecue covers, there are high-quality and low-quality covers. If you leave your mower out in the elements, invest in a quality cover that will keep the rain out. If you keep it in a shed, a lighter dust cover will reduce grime.

5. Grass Catcher: If you don’t have a bag behind your mower, or the option to have one, you can still have your grass collected by installing a grass catcher to the side of your mower. You may have to install a custom faceplate to the discharge opening of your mower, but it will contain your clippings.

6. Cup-holder/phone mount: Lastly, you can have a little fun when you mow (as long as you’re safe). Go ahead and install a cup holder to hold your water while you mow on hot days, or install a phone mount, so you can listen to some good tunes. Anything that makes mowing more fun will ensure that you do it when it is needed.

Accessories for walk-behind lawnmowers aren’t as gadget-driven and exciting as they can be for riding mowers, but they do exist and can help enhance your mowing experience and results.
