Spring is around the corner here in Alpharetta and Cumming and after a cold, rainy, and icy winter your lawn has taken a beating. The soil is  compacted and the grass appears to have thined over the winter due to erosion. The best thing you can do for youaerated bermuda.jpg lawn is a Core Aeration.

In order to maintain a healthy beautiful lawn in Metro Atlanta, there are some basic lawn care practices such as proper mowing, watering, and fertilization that need to be done. Aeration is another key practice that should be done every year to ensure that nutrients can reach the soil and root system of your lawn. Aeration is extremely important here in Alpharetta, Milton,Johns Creek, and the surrounding areas due to our clay based compact soils.

Aeration involves poking holes in the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the root system grow deeper and produce a stronger, healthier lawn.

The best time for aeration is during the growing season, when the grass can heal and fill in any open areas after soil plugs are removed. Ideally, aerate the lawn with cool season (fescue) grass in the fall and those with warm season grass (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede) in the spring, once the grass begins growing and there is no risk of frost. You do not want open holes and roots exposed if we get a late freeze.

The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction. Compacted soils can be as hard as concrete which prevents proper circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil. This also makes it difficult for roots to develop and the grass to spread.  Excess lawn thatch can also cause problems with getting nutrients to the soil and can also cause disease issues on certain turf types.

Aeration on warm season grasses will cut the root system and allow for new growth to sprout everywhere a cut was made. This very similar to pruning a shrub. This is a great way to thicken the lawn.

Aeration can be done by renting a machine at the local home improvement store or hire a professional company like Greenfeet to do it. When hiring a company, make sure they are licensed and insured. Hiring a lawn care company may cost a few more dollars, but saving your back and a Saturday is well worth the extra money spent.

Aerating your lawn combined with other cultural practices will give you a healthy beautiful lawn you can be proud of.
