So how do you grow a lawn that is tough and resistant to stressors and can make it through the daily wear and tear of weather and traffic? Here are a few of the basic, best practice lawn care tips for doing just that.

Choose the right seed.

Your lawn care adventure starts before you even have a lawn. That’s right, if you are lucky enough to be starting from scratch you have the great opportunity to choose the best seed mixtures for your area. There are many grass seed options to choose from, so it is important to do some research on what grows the best in your area. Also, look at things like water needs and maintenance guides for each individual type. Choosing the best seed for your needs can help you manage your lawn continually once it has been established.

Water with the right frequency and duration.

A really important part of established a healthy and happy lawn is to encourage it to grow roots that extend far down into the soil. This allows for the grass to reach more nutrients and moisture. Plus, the father into the soil the roots go, the more insulated and protected they are from the cold.

Instead of watering frequently, try watering less often but for longer periods of time. This is what can help grass become hardy and encourage those roots to dig deep.

 Tips for Watering

Mow at the right height.

This is a hugely important lawn care tip that some homeowners don’t get quite right. You don’t want to mow your lawn just at whatever height you feel like. There is a recommended height range for each type of grass and following that recommendation can go a long ways in helping your lawn become strong and healthy. For the most part, many of the grass types want to be mowed at about three inches in height, give or take a half inch or two. Find out what grass you have and mow at the appropriate height!
