Better Preparation For Winter Means A Better Spring

Winter is a great time to cut back on a few things such as hours spent working on the lawn and gathering vegetables and fruits from your trees and garden.frost-1204431_1280.jpg Not only this, as winter approaches and many plants, trees, and shrubs enter their dormancy stage, it is a great time to prune them. Pruning is good for your shrubs and trees as it allows the branches that aren’t doing so well or may have been infected or damaged by bugs to be removed, allowing the tree to focus on growing the healthy branches next spring when it enters its next growth phase.

If you are a confident trimmer and want to trim your own trees and bushes, that is great. Make sure that you are trimming away only branches that are failing to grow properly or decaying. It is best to begin pruning only after careful inspection of the tree or shrub. If you aren’t experienced in trimming or worried about doing it yourself, you can look into local lawn and garden services that are near you. The professionals will know what they are doing and make sure your trees, shrubs, and bushes are ready for next year!

Another great way to get ready now for the next growing season is to take care of your flower beds and planting beds. Clear out any debris such as leaves, toys, branches, sticks, and other things. Take time to find any bulbs that you want to plant now so you can enjoy them next spring. Plant the bulbs as directed and then make sure they are protected through the winter by laying out a healthy layer of organic mulch such as bark. The mulch will help the ground stay a more regulated temperature, protecting the roots of your plants. The appropriate amount of mulch is about an inch or one and a half inches. Too much mulch can cause rot on trees and shrubs, so be careful to leave space between the trunk and your mulch, and be sure to only spread an even layer of an appropriate depth.

Taking time to mulch and prep your lawn for winter, and by so doing for next spring, you also get the benefit of having a much more manicured lawn throughout the winter months. Even if you get snow, you will appreciate knowing that your lawn and plants are well cared for and properly prepared for the colder weather.  When spring arrives, you are going to be relieved you put in some effort now as you won’t have so much grunt work to do right as the weather begins to warm back up!
