Common vs. Hybrid Bermudagrass in Dunwoody, GA

There are many popular cool season and warm season grasses throughout the United States. In the southern states, warm season grasses are popular because they don’t experience as long of dormancy periods due to warmer average temperatures. Warm season grasses include centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, and bermudagrass.

Common bermudagrass is one of the most common warm season grasses in the United States, but there are many varieties of bermudagrass that have been cultivated in order to make better turf options for commercial and residential applications.

Common Bermudagrass

One of the reasons common berumudagrass is so popular is that it is very easy to grow. In fact, some states consider it to be a weed. Common bermuda has a lighter color to it than its hybrid counterparts. The negative aspects to it are coarseness. It also grows quickly, so it is more difficult to maintain a short turf. The worst part of common bermudagrass is it can take over gardens and other places where it is unwanted.

Hybrid Bermudgrass

Hybrid bermudagrasses, on the other hand, have been managed in order to defeat the weaknesses of common strands. They are a rich, dark green color, and they have less seeds. They are infertile by nature, so they aren’t invasive, and they are disease-resistant. They have also been made more cold-tolerant, so lawn users will experience less dormancy.

Improved Common Bermudagrass

There are many varieties of common bermudagrass that have some of the advantages of hybrids such as dark green color and finer texture. These varieties have differing rates of growth and disease tolerance. Ultimately, hybrids are best, but improved common bermudagrasses provide some middle ground.

What variety of bermudagrass is right for you?

The bermudagrass that is right for you depends on many factors. If you don’t mind a medium-height lawn and want to have minimal but regular upkeep, common bermudagrass is probably your best bet. It is an “invasive” grass, but it is also very easy to maintain with very little fertilizers or soil amendments. If you want a “perfect” lawn with beautiful color that requires maintenance, but every ounce of sweat yields positive results, a hybrid is your best choice. Of course, most people are somewhere in between these two extremes, which is why improved common bermudagrass is so popular.

Ask yourself this question: do you want a putting green? If you want a perfectly trimmed, short, dark green turf, then you want a hybrid bermudagrass. If this sounds like more effort than you are willing to spend, you have many other options with common varieties.
