Dormanred Raspberries for Southern States

How to Plant Dormanred Raspberries Anywhere in Georgia

The Dormanred trailing rasberry can be grown anywhere in Georgia, as it was developed for southern states by Mississippi State University. Brambles should be planted in the late winter to early spring in 8 inches of tilled earth. This type of raspberry prefers soil that is on the acidic side but with only a pH of around 6.2. Lime can be applied to the soil if necessary before planting. If you want to keep the raspberries thriving, plant them against a trellis and keep old canes trimmed back annually.

Annual Growth

Dormanred Raspberries are biennial producers, which means their canes only produce every two years. Each year, however, new canes grow. This means you’ll have canes which produce annually after the first year of growth. Once canes are harvested, they will dies and must be removed.

Care

Like lawns, raspberries require 1 inch of water a week for optimum growth. They should also be kept weed and sucker free by either regularly cultivating the soil or applying mulch. Both water and weeding are essential for high yields.

Fertilizer

Fertilizing should happen twice a year in the first year, once in April and once in July. Every year thereafter, they should be fertilized twice: once in early spring and once in early summer.

Harvesting is Specific

Harvesting raspberries from the Dormared occurs from June to July depending on your location and altitude. You’ll recognize that it is time when the berries' shine diminishes, and they get a matte look. The time of day picked matters for these berries. Once the dew is dried in the late morning is when the berries will be juiciest.

How are the berries?

According to the UGA extension office, Dormanred berries are better for desserts than fresh eating. In order for them to be sweet, they must be very ripe. On the plus side, they will yield a lot of fruit! However, make sure they aren’t shiny if you are eating them fresh, or you will be in for a tart surprise.

There is nothing better than going to your back yard to pick berries for a pie or a simple cobbler. The flavor is fresher, and there is a certain satisfaction in harvesting the fruits of your labor. However, home raspberries should not be left to grow wild like they are sometimes found on the edge of country roads. With a little trimming, fertilizing, and regular watering, you will get high yields of quality fruit each summer.
