Autumn doesn’t just have to be exciting for adults, kids can learn to enjoy the experience through some fun and simple activities you can do with them in your own backyard. It is a great opportunity to teach kids about thekid fun fall.jpgseasons, allow them to explore some of the colors and sights that fall brings, and allows you time to bond with your little one. To get you started, we put together some simple activities that will help you and your little ones begin your backyard adventures.

Leaf Piles and Leaf Mazes

This is probably the go-to for many parents. Raking up the leaves into huge piles for the kids, and you!, to play in is a great way to bring some excitement and fun not only to the season, but also to cleaning up the yard! Take turns sitting in the pile or wrestling through the leaves. Have soft leave fights even! If you want to get a little more creative with your leaves, and your children are old enough to understand how to do mazes, take some time to rake leaves into the outline of a maze. This gives them an opportunity to try to solve the maze and to enjoy the backyard with you!

Leaf Houses

Leaves give you so many opportunities for fun, so if you have some big trees, be sure to take the time to do at least a few of these activities! Rake your leaves up into knee height walls and design the layout of a house. Be sure to leave an open space for the door! If you have an old blanket that the kids can play with outside, you can give them one to use for a ‘bed’ in their leaf house bedroom!

Color Matching Games

Since fall has a lot of great colors, it can be an excellent chance for you to help your little ones learn some of the colors. Put together a little worksheet that shows many of the colors of fall, and that are available in your yard, and then go on a color hunt with them. This gives them the opportunity to apply things they are learning insides, out in the world.

Make Leaf Art

Making art out of leaves can be a fun way to preserve some of the memories you and your children make while they are young. Find pretty leaves in your yard or at the park, bring them home and do some crafting! Try pasting the leaves on a paper to make a colorful collage, or pressing and drying the leaves to frame later!
