How to Store Your Hose for Winter

Your lawn still needs water during the winter, but there is generally enough precipitation that you can store your hose for winter. This does not mean leaving it on the side of the house to weather and become brittle. This is why so many hoses split in the spring. Instead, properly store your hose and have it in working order when you go to use it again in the spring.

1. Drain

First, you want to make sure you don’t leave any water in the hose. It doesn’t have to be completely dry, but you don’t want to leave copious amounts of water in the hose. To remove water, hold up one end of the hose and then move down the length of the hose. The water will drain out the lowered side of the hose. This gets the hose dry enough that it can handle storage.

2. Cap

Many people forget that hoses have caps, but they are great ways to keep your hoses clear of debris and bugs that may find your hose to be a cozy nesting place. Putting a cap on the end of your hose keeps it relatively clean, which is especially nice if you have youngsters who like to sip from it during the summer.

3. Wrap

If you wrap up your hose while it’s warm outside during the middle of the day, it won’t have as much memory, and it will be easier to loop. Use a hose reel if you have one, or use your arm. Don’t leave your hose haphazardly piled up on the floor of your garage. It may not hurt much, but it isn’t good gardening practice and is an eyesore that will last all winter.

4. Warm and Dry

Keep your hose in a warm and dry location, and keep it elevated, so it does not mildew from moisture on the ground. A hose hanger mounted in the garage or storage shed will do the trick. If you have more hoses than one hanger will hold, place them on shelves or mount extra hangers to handle the job.

Make Spring Easy

If you do it right, it will be easy when spring comes to take inventory of your hoses and know if you need to purchase anymore. This count will be reliable because your hoses will be in working condition when your lawn needs your attention again.
