When you live in a high-humidity state like Georgia, you live in a place where fungus thrives. High temperatures and moisture will allow mold to grow in your yard, so proper aeration and limited watering are essential to fungus prevention. Even then, it can happen.

How to Tell if Your Lawn has Fungus in Milton, GA

1. Spots

One way that fungus will show up in your yard is by discolored spots. Different colored spots can mean different things.

  • Brown Spots are very common and can occur if water stands on grass for over 24 hours. They will expand in warm weather because fungus loves warm moisture. You may need to use a fungicide if these spots expand.
  • Dollar Spots are caused by Clarireedia homoeocarpa, and they affect the blades of grass but not the roots. It typically occurs from early spring and early fall because days are warm and nights are cool, so moisture stays. These spots are common on golf courses but can occur in any lawn, and they spread mechanically through mycelium production.
  • White or Gray Spots are generally snow mold. When snow is melting, there isn’t much you can do to remove the moisture from the ground, and white or gray spots are indicative of mold.

2. Arcs

Arcs or circles of discolored grass may be Fairy wing fungus. There may be dark grass within the circle or arc, and mushrooms may grow here. The rings can grow to a big as 30 feet, and they may be very recognizable if the ring is pronounced.

3. Red or Pink Threads

Red thread is caused by Laetisaria fuciformis and looks similar to antlers. Some may appear to be pink.

Frustrating Fungus

Fungal infections in the yard can be frustrating when not properly identified because many people think that a yard with a fungal appearance just needs more water or fertilizer. Therefore, fungus is allowed to grow instead of being properly treated and killed.

If you believe you have a fungus affecting the beauty of your lawn, call a lawn care professional and get an evaluation. Not only will they be able to tell you what type of fungus is in your lawn, but they will have remedies. Your fungus problem will be fixed in the right way the first time, so you won’t have to go through trial and error to effectively rid yourself of this annoyance.
