oranges-1117628_1280Living near some natural forest, protected land, or wild habitat can be a really beautiful place to live, but it definitely comes with its own challenges in John's Creek, GA. For one, you are more prone to deal with the animals that call that place home. One of the big struggles people face living in a place that deer are likely to get to or visit is that the deer don’t just come to say hello. Deer will eat all of your plants, lay waste to your flower beds, and will even eat your trees. This can be particularly upsetting if you are trying to grow some fruit trees so you can enjoy their produce. Trees in general are also pretty expensive. So what can you do to prevent deer from eating your plants and your trees? We rounded up some of the best answers and want to share them with you!

Build a solid fence.

mule-deer-1730072_1280Putting up deer-proof fencing can be one of the best ways to protect your property and your trees. Mind you, the fencing you put up is going to have to be tough and tall. Deer will jump over any short fences or make their way through fences that are not strong. The type of fencing that will deter deer from entering your property and destroying your fruit trees is going to be near eight feet tall and will be secured at ground level, or extend into the soil as an anchor. This might not be exactly what you want to have in your yard, but it is quite effective. This type of fencing can also be a bit expensive, so it might not be the best solution to your deer problem if you have a tight budget. On the flip side, good fencing may have a large upfront cost, but it will save you money by protecting your plants and your trees, as well as lasting a long time for continued protection.

Hang soap from the trees.

Deer typically don’t like strong smells such as soap. One tactic you might try if you find there are only a few deer that terrorize your fruit trees, it to hang strong smelling bars of soap from the trees. Deer won’t appreciate the smell and will typically give the area a wide berth, unless they really want what you have growing, and then you may need to use another tactic to keep them out of your lawn, garden, or orchard area.
