Lawn Care is Essential Amidst Pandemic

Posted by Christine Crandall on Apr 13, 2020 7:48:31 PM

Orders to shelter in place are confusing to Americans who have never faced government requests to maintain social distance. Luckily for lawn care enthusiasts, these orders don’t prevent lawn care or landscaping industries from completely shutting down. If you are looking to have some lawn work done, you can rest assured that lawn care is continuing during this pandemic.

How Can Lawn Care Continue?

In many places, businesses that are able to maintain social distancing recommendations are allowed to continue operations. In lawn care, there are typically only a few workers on one job, and they are able to maintain their distance.

Lawn Care is “Essential.”

The National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) recently wrote a letter to government officials explaining why the industry was “essential.” In it, it included reasons such as landscape necessities around roads and utilities, pest reduction, crime reduction, and a minimal to no impact on COVID-19 transmission.

  • Roads and Utilities: If the landscapes of businesses and homes are allowed to grow wild, they will get in the way of roads and utilities. This could cause fires, and it could create obstructions that increase the danger of driving.
  • Pest Reduction: When you think about all the critters that “accrue” in lawns running wild, it is easy to see how lawn care is essential. Not only can disease-carrying mosquitoes move in, but there are many other pest that will enjoy your small jungle.
  • Crime Reduction: One of the things that NALP pointed out is that areas that are not well-kept are statistically attractive to criminality. It is in line with the broken windows theory out of New York City. Lawn care is associated with pro-social activity, and criminals are more likely to convene and participate in crime when there is an anti-social appearance. In this way, lawn care represents community, and it acts almost like a Neighborhood Watch program.
  • Minimal to No Transmission: Lastly, because the lawn care business is not filled with people working close together, it already maintains social distance standards. Lawn care organizations are advised to put an increased effort into social distancing, but they can do this without stopping business.

Thank Goodness Lawn Care Will Continue

We cannot say with certainty that lawn care will never be shut down because of a pandemic, but for now, it is holding steady. This is a great thing for communities as well as individuals who are unable or don’t want to go out and do lawn work on their own.
