If you find yourself striving to keep up with the Jones’s with their fancy straight stripes mowed into their perfect lawn, then we hear you. It’s tough to be outdone. You are out there after work mowing big circles and misshapen ovals around trees and gardens, but the guy up the street has perfect, lateral lines in his yard in alternating light and dark shades. He also mows first thing in the morning each Sunday without fail, and you think he might be bordering on perfection.

Well, if this little nightmare resonates with you and your lawn, you can fix part of it. You may not be able to adopt the crazy rigid schedule of Mr. Jones, and frankly his anal retentiveness is quite redundant and boring. But you can have perfect stripes in your lawn.

Mowing Straight Stripes Into Your Grass in Sandy Springs, GA

1. Get a Striping Kit

The stripes on the lawn are caused by the way the grass is bent when mowing. You can purchase a striping kit for your mower or you can make one yourself. Check out YouTube for more instructions.

2. Find a Straight Line

If you have a sidewalk lining your yard, this can be the straight line for your guidance. If you don’t, use something to ensure you are perfectly straight. Some people tie a string to two stakes and mow along the side making sure the wheels are barely touching the string. Others claim that looking about 10 feet in front of you while mowing will prevent the inclination to waver. Just make sure the first line is straight, or you are ruined.

3. Decide on a Width

You probably want stripes that are bigger than one pass with a mower, but you have to mow the same direction in order to widen your stripe. This can be accomplished by skipping the width of one pass when you change directions and then going back when you are facing the right way again.

4. Mow around Obstacles

If there is a tree in the middle of the yard, that’s okay. Mow around it. Then, correct the bulge in your stripe with the next stripe. It’s as simple as that!

It Doesn’t have to be Stripes

You have pattern options once you begin striping. Some people turn their mower by 90 degrees and create a checker pattern with perpendicular stripes. Others mow spirals into their yard. Get creative, and your yard will be the best on the block.
