Most people aim to mulch their flower beds, and there are many reasons for doing so. However, it is doubtful that many people know the exact reasons that they mulch. Essentially, it looks nice, so they keep on doing it. Here are a few mulch basics that will make you a little bit better at the mulching experience.

7 Mulch Basics

1. Protects Soil and Roots

One of the many advantages of mulch is that it protects the soil and roots of the plant. Adding a proper amount of mulch ensures that normal weather and possible animal disturbances will not affect the plant. It also allows the soil to retain moisture and nutrients.

2. Allows for Air and Water

It is important that plants are able to eat and breathe, so having a porous top layer ensures that protection does not stifle growth.

3. Can alter pH

Depending on the type of compost you use, you can alter the pH of the soil to fit your plants. In minor cases, this may eliminate the need for soil amendments.

4. Weed barrier

If you layer enough mulch over the ground around your plant, it will create a good weed barrier. The depth will have to be 2 to 3 inches in order to block enough light to prevent growth, but it will do the trick.

5. Nutrients

Compost is almost never a bad thing. Since mulch typically stays in the garden until it decays, one of the benefits of it is nutrients. Over time, mulch becomes a good fertilizer.

6. Annual

Another great feature of mulch is that it only needs to be refreshed/applied annually. If you think about fertilizers and watering, this is not that big of a commitment for the rewards you will see in your yard. Once a year for weed free flower beds and fed plants? I’ll take it!

7. Beautification

Many people mulch their flower beds because it makes them more beautiful, and this is true. A flower bed without mulch only looks its best when it is being watered, so the soil will look moist and kept. Otherwise, soil will crack and dry, and it just won’t look as good as it did when it was turned up. Mulch always looks good because it was meant to have aesthetic appeal. If you want your gardens to look better, make sure you have adequate mulch.

Mulch is a no-brainer when it comes to beautiful gardening, but it can be hard to get started. Contact your local extension office or lawn care provider for more details on how to start planning your mulching endeavors.
