Native Tulip Trees of Georgia

Posted by Christine Crandall on Jun 22, 2019 10:24:28 PM

The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is not the tree-form of tulips (tulipa) but rather the name of a tree native to Georgia that has leaves and blooms resembling the bulbiferous flower. Its leaves have four lobes, and its April to early-May blooms are a beautiful light color of yellow with orange marks on the inside. You may not notice the blooms of a tulip tree unless the tree is fairly young or a storm has blown down some branches because these trees tend to grow to great heights. They are a tree that has been grand enough to be named the state tree of Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky, and their grandeur does not fade in Georgia.

Benefits to Owning a Tulip Tree

  • Shade: The tulip tree, also called tulip poplar or yellow poplar, grows quickly to great heights. This deciduous tree can be a quick shade producer on properties that are lacking this feature. Tulip trees do not do well if planted in the shade, but they are good at giving shade for the home that needs it.
  • Nectar: The tulip tree produces an amazing amount of nectar. It is a huge attractant of both hummingbirds and honey bees. The nectar from one tulip tree is enough for honey bees to produce a reported 4 pounds of honey. This honey is coveted by bakers who like its strong flavor.
  • Native: Many homeowners don’t appreciate the benefit of native trees and flowers in their garden because they become very commonplace. However, native plants have already adapted to your climate, and they are less likely to succumb to disease or weather conditions. Choosing a native plant to put in your yard is like putting a duck into water. It just works.

Other Facts About Tulip Trees

  • They grow tall! It takes about 200 years, but these trees have the potential to reach up to almost 200 feet!
  • They are a member of the Magnolia family, and this is easy to see once you look at their beautiful blooms.
  • The tulip tree’s seed provide a good food source for cardinals, other birds, and squirrels.

When considering a tree for your own backyard (or front yard), native trees should be on your list of considerations. Not only are they heartier in your own environment, but in this case, they are a beautiful alternative to other options. Tulip trees will grow quickly and produce unique and beautiful flowers each year.
