To start, you can invest some time in learning all the different types of grass, maintenance practices that help you have your best lawn, and all the tips and tricks that can really help you keep a nice green grass all year round. It is important do so some basic research or searching when it comes to lawn care (if you care about having a decent or nice one!) because different types of grasses do better in some regions while others do better in regions with different temperature ranges.

We know that having a well taken care of lawn can be time consuming and it likely is frustrating to many when their beautiful lawn fades away to its brown dormancy stage, whether that is during the heat of summer or the cold of winter. Last week we talked about overseeding warm season turfgrass with cool season seeds, to help keep some green in during the cooler winter months. This week we wanted to touch on overseeding cool season turfgrass with warm season seeds. As you can imagine, the process is much the same, but the results are for the opposite season.

Most Georgia lawns fall into the category of being planted with warm season grasses since the temperatures are warmer than many of the northern states, but some of the more northern lawns in the state can be a cool season mixture! If you have one of these lawns, you likely don’t enjoy the fact that the heat beats up your previously lovely green lawn you had this spring. Having a nice lawn during the spring and the fall just doesn’t cut it for some homeowners. For this reason, we are here with some basic information to help you out!

If you go to your local lawn care store, there will be bags of seeds typically used in your area, both warm season and cool season mixes. Make sure to choose one of the warm season varieties and take the time to read the instructions. There will be instructions for planting a new lawn and for overseeding. You want the overseeding instructions, this process calls for less seed than starting a new lawn.

The best way to ensure your overseeding will take good effect is to prepare your lawn appropriately. Mow the lawn, rake off the clippings, and if you can, take the time to aerate your lawn. Spread your seed over the lawn with a fertilizer spreader and follow that with a starter fertilizer that will help your seeds right from the beginning. Water appropriately and watch your new warm season seeds begin to sprout and bring some green back to your lawn!
