Planting Your Garden For A Spring Harvest

When you think about gardening, many people think about planting when the weather warms up, but the good news about living in the south is that youbeets-2861272_1280.jpg can actually plant many different vegetables that are hardy enough to be planted in January and onwards. These plants and vegetables can handle the temperatures that the southern winters bring on and even some of the frost.

Before you really get down to the planting there are a few things you have to do. Decide where you are going to plant your garden. You want to put it somewhere you are going to be influenced to take care of it, so somewhere semi-close to the house. You also want to put it somewhere that makes sense with the layout of your lawn. You don’t need to make an awkward plot in the middle of your yard. Find a sunny corner of the yard or a sizable flowerbed area you could plant vegetables in. From there, it is important to do a soil test and use any soil amendments necessary to have healthy soil. While you have the tests you could check your lawn’s soil as well! Your lawn’s health depends on the health of the soil it is growing in, just like your vegetable garden!

Using compost is a great way to improve the quality, health, and nutrition of your soil which will help your plants and vegetables grow healthy and strong. Compost provides many organic nutrients and helps the soil maintain a health structure. Your plants are sure to show their gratitude by a more bountiful harvest, plus it also means your plants will likely be more disease resistant! Check out our previous post on making your own compost if you would like to do it yourself, or purchase some from the lawn care center near you. Just make sure to get a high quality brand!

Naturally, what you can plant and when depends entirely on where you live in the south and what the season shapes out to be. If the winter is supposed to be the coldest on record, you probably want to wait a little longer before prepping your garden and planting those seeds. Pay attention to weather trends and predictions, and read the seed packages to know the prime time to plant them for a bountiful harvest.

Just a few of the vegetables you may think about planting sometime during January to March are beets, carrots, onions, asparagus, kale, broccoli, and turnips. Only plant the things that you like and will eat, otherwise you are wasting time, money, effort, and garden space.
