The basic rule for preparing your garden for the winter and getting things cleaned up is the more you do this fall, the better prepared you will be when spring rolls around again. This means that all your efforts will be greatly appreciated by youself when the weather warms up.pottery-1839904_1920.jpg The basics of getting things ready for the colder months is cleaning things up and covering others.

Start the cleanup.

Putting your garden to bed isn’t as difficult as it might sound. The most important thing for you to do is to thoroughly clean out all the debris from this past growing season. Trim back all the plants that go dormant for the winter months and remove the ones that only last for one growing season. Pull out the dead plants and properly dispose of any weeds that got in some growing time as well.

Soil test time.

Yep, fall is a great time to get a soil test done to tell you what soil amendments you may need. They will help you decide what kind and how much fertilizer you may need for a better growing season next year as well! You can purchase these from lawn care companies or hire a company to come do a thorough test for you!

Compost and mulch your beds and garden.

Fall is a great time to utilize some finished compost and cover with mulch. Take the time to find a nutritive option and spread out the appropriate thickness, according to the directions to protect your soil through the winter months. It can be useful to simply rake aside your old mulch and spread out the layer of compost before spreading the old mulch back over the top to help suppress any weeds from springing up next spring.

Use your leaves!

Leaves are a natural item that can benefit your lawn and your garden this fall. Not only are the leaves falling a beautiful sight, they can also be mulched up and spread about your lawn and garden to help restore some important nutrients to the soil and encourage beneficial microorganisms in the soil.

If you have a lot of leaves around, you can also start a compost pile with them. They are a wonderful carbon element to add to your compost heap in order to offset the nitrogen components you dispose of in your pile.

Design your next garden!

Fall is a great time to make changes or add space to your gardening area if you realized you didn’t have a lot of room for your vegetables this past year. Take time to design some newgarden boxes or plan out where you might put your vegetables next year.
