Save Money This Year With A Smarter Landscape (Pt. 2)

Having a lawn is a great thing, but sometimes it can quickly eat up money when you have to water nearly the entirety of your property to keep it green throughout the hot summer days. We put together some of the best ways tosmarter landscape.jpg reduce your water bill and your lawn costs this year in this two-part blog. Check out last week’s post if you haven’t already, and try out some of the tips below to start saving the big bucks!

Choose The Right Plants

One of the most important things you can do to minimize your water cost is to choose the right plants for your area. Native plants are great because they have adapted to the region and its specific temperatures and weather conditions. Using these types of plants, or drought resistant plants, is a great way to ensure a beautiful lawn and garden even when water is scarce!

Add A Deck

Having a backyard and some property is great, but being able to use the space is even better. Extend your living space to the great outdoors by building a deck. If you have an animal, you can make a living space for them under the deck, to keep them safe, secure, and protected from the weather. This will reduce the area you need to plant grass and need to water, and make your space more useful. Outdoor living space is great for late summer nights and get togethers with friends and family members. Make your deck large enough for a table, some chairs, and other furniture to make it a comfortable place to hang out. You can add umbrellas or shade coverings to keep your deck cooler on the hot days.

Play Areas For The Kids

If you want to make the yard a haven for your kiddos, and a great place to learn and play, develop some of your space into an area designated for them. You could put in a sandbox for the kids to dig in and bury treasures, or maybe make an area for your swing set that is made of mulch or bark. Both don’t need to be watered (saving you money), but utilize space and increase the usability of your yard. Your kids will be happy to have places to play and run around, and you will be happy they are safe and close to home.

Walkways

Another great way to add visual interest, depth, and color to your lawn is to break it up with a walkway or two. Utilize some beautiful stepping stones and gravel to create a beautiful path leading to your garden or a large flower bed. Perhaps you would like to use bark to make your pathway, or maybe you would like to make a brick path. Whatever you choose, the change in the bland landscape is sure to make your lawn more interesting and reduce how much you have to water, without taking away the beauty of having lovely green turfgrass.
