Should You Mow in the Winter in Johns Creek, GA?

Depending on the winter, you may not need to mow when the temperatures drop, as grass grows very slowly during this year. It may go dormant. However, if your grass is getting a little unsightly during winter months, you should mow it. But take care not to damage it.

How to Mow in the Winter

1. Don’t mow when it is wet. This is vital to lawn health because mowing a wet lawn will damage the root structure of the grass when you make muddy footprints, and the wheels tear up the soil. Your mower will not evenly cut wet grass either, and you’ll end up with a clumpy mess.

2. Raise your blade. Because your grass may be a little sensitive to harsher winter conditions, it is good to allow it to grow a little higher than you do during summer months. This will help to protect it against frost damage.

3. Don’t mow when there’s frost. In fact, don’t walk on your grass when the temperatures dip below freezing. You’ll just break grass blades and cause damage that will be very apparent in the spring.

4. Mulch. If you have a mulch setting on your lawnmower, winter is a good time to use it. Mulch will help to protect grass in case of any cold snaps, and it will break down and give your grass nutrients.

5. Stick to the 1/3 rule. When the conditions are right for mowing, make sure you don’t mow more than 1/3 of the grass at a time. This ensures that the grass doesn’t get over-stressed from a severe hacking. Winter months are the most important time to adhere to this rule because grass is already in a stressed or dormant state.

You can mow your lawn during the winter, but there are a few things to do and a few things to avoid in order to prevent damaging your lawn. You basically want it to be dry and above freezing, but you can also help your lawn by allowing it to grow taller and mulching clippings into the lawn.

Of course, many people don’t mow their lawn during the winter, and that is okay, as long as you live in an area where the grass almost stops growing. If the winter is unusually warm, you probably have to mow at least a couple times, so this list of tips will ensure success.
