Lace Bug Characteristics

These insects may not be impressive in size, but they are impressive in the amount of damage they can do to your ornamental grass, shrubs and trees. As with most insects, there are quite a few varieties of this bug, but the ones you really want to watch out for are the azalea and andromeda lace bugs, the hawthorn/sycamore lace bugs, or the grass lace bug. Definitely not an attractive bug, these typically look like flat and rectangular. The measure about one-eighth to one-fourth long. They have a lace-like covering behind their head and wings which is what gives them their innocent-sounding name. Both the adult and the nymph of this bug suck the sap out of plants using their piercing mouth. Essentially, lace bugs just drain plants of everything they need to thrive and even to live at all.

How To Check For Lace Bugs

The best way to be aware if lace bugs are beginning to target your plants is to check for them Examine the leaves of your plants and look for any of the rectangular insects. You will also want to watch out for any lace bug eggs or young lace bug nymphs. Spring is when you are going to want to be most thorough. If you discover these little annoyances on your plants, spray them off the plants using a strong stream of water. This can be done easily with an outdoor hose.
