The Ups and Downs of Bermudagrass in East Cobb County, GA

Bermudagrass is the most common grass for lawns in Georgia, and there are many reasons for this. Unfortunately, it has its downfalls like every other grass. When choosing to keep your Bermudagrass or plant new Bermudagrass, consider the benefits and the drawbacks of this hearty grass type. It has its ups and its downs, but it is clearly a top pick in this region of the country.

The Ups of Bermudagrass

1. Warm Season Grass

Bermudagrass thrives in warm climates, which is perfect for Georgia summers. It also does well in moist climates…another plus for the area.

2. pH Tolerant

This type of grass will grow in both acidic or alkali soils, which is nice in areas like East Cobb County that tend to be acidic.

3. Rapid Growth

Because Bermudagrass grows quickly, a yard will be established quickly. You won’t have to wait two growing seasons to have a thick carpet of grass.

4. Hearty

When you have a Bermudagrass lawn, you have a disease resistant lawn. Although it is somewhat susceptible to disease, it usually can overcome it without the aid of fungicides or other chemical remedies.

5. Hybrid Option

The hybrid options available in Bermudagrass allow for short-growing grass along with varieties that establish well by seed. Some varieties are also very finely textured, making them the perfect grass for sports fields and lawns.

The Downs of Bermudagrass

1. Warm Season Grass

Because it is a warm season grass, Bermudagrass goes dormant in the fall. This is more relevant in some Northern Georgia areas where the dormant season can last longer. It bounces back in the spring for a good green-up.

2. Difficult to Control

Because it grows and spreads quickly, Bermudagrass can encroach on sidewalks and driveways. It also tends to work its way into flowerbeds. If you aren’t into edging maintenance, it can get away from you pretty quickly.

3. Shade Intolerant

Lastly, Bermudagrass is shade intolerant, especially under leafy deciduous trees. It tends to do better under pine trees. This makes it a difficult choice for those who have beautiful shade trees shading their yard from the summer sun.

If you have a house out in the open with a big yard open to sunlight, Bermudagrass is definitely a good option. It’s also good for any size of yard that doesn’t have much shade. Be warned though, this grass will grow, and sometimes it will grow in places you don’t want it to. But with a little yard maintenance, it is a perfect and popular choice for many Georgian residents.
