The Wretched Winter Weed in Gwinnett, GA

Posted by Christine Crandall on Jan 13, 2020 1:31:20 PM

Many people incorrectly assume that they can rest during the winter, as weeds and sometimes grass will go dormant. Not only is this notion faulty, it is also what gives your winter weeds such a sporting chance at growing during winter months.

Pre-emergent Herbicide

Pre-emergent herbicides are your best bet when it comes to winter weed control, but this is not an action that occurs during winter months. If you’ve missed your chance to apply a pre-emergent, you must focus on alternative weed control options.

Herbicide

If you’ve missed your chance, you may be able to handle winter weeds with a selective herbicide that will not affect your grass. Each type of weed responds differently to different herbicides, so it is important to follow label directions.

Pulling Winter Weeds

In some circumstances, the best way to take care of winter weeds is to pull them before they go to seed. This may not prevent them from coming back, but it prevents the growth of the problem and gives you a chance to use a pre-emergent in the fall.

Best Defense is a Good Offense

The best way to prevent winter weeds is by keeping a healthy lawn. If your lawn is thick and luscious, there will be no room for winter weeds to take hold. In this way, you can fight weeds by eliminating their opportunities, which means eliminating spaces where they have the possibility to grow.

Common Winter Weeds

There are many common winter weeds including:

  • Henbit
  • Annual Bluegrass
  • Common Chickweed
  • Henbit
  • Speedwell
  • Bittercress

Winter Weeds are a Nuisance

There are no breaks when it comes to weed control, as some weeds grow as readily in the winter as others do in the summer. A proper year-round weed control strategy can alleviate some of the problem, but you’ll want to be vigilant and inspect your lawn in the winter to make sure winter weeds aren’t becoming a problem. Regardless of your pre-emergent herbicide use, it is very important to visually inspect your lawn during the winter to make sure nothing has been missed.

Winter does correlate with a “rest” in lawn care, and you won’t have to mow or water as often as you would during peak growing seasons. However, that doesn’t mean you are completely negated from lawn care responsibilities. If you want to have a beautiful lawn come spring, make sure you are engaging in winter weed control.
