Find me on:

This weekend in Cumming, GA, I was out in the lawn playing football with my 4 year old son and he was curious about what was digging in our lawn. These little dirt mounds are created by an organism that are very beneficial to the lawn. The little dirt mounds we found throughout the lawn are not damaging insects or moles.

The mounds were made by Earthworms. Having a lot of earthworms in your lawn shows that the lawn and soil are healthy. Earthworms can also reduce the thatch build up because they consume the dead roots and stems. The worms are also busy mixing up the soil by moving nutrients up from deep in the soil and moving the organic matter down into the soil. This creates the ideal environment for growing turf and plants. This also encourages microbial activity in the soil. The microbes help to break down the organic fertilizers in the soil turning them into a usable food source for the plant.

Many customers who have used an all chemical lawn service usually do not see Earthworms in the lawn, they are usually found dead on the sidewalks or driveway. Using high nitrogen fertilizers that are high in chlorine, salts, and the use of harmful chemicals damage the populations of Earthworms to the point of non-existence. Customers using the Greenfeet Lawncare program enjoy knowing we use products that have a low toxicity and organic-based fertilizers that are low in salts and chlorine. In fact many of our customers call after being on the Greenfeet Program for a year, think something is wrong with their lawn when they find the dirt mounds. Explaining to them they are made by Earthworms and this is a great thing, leaves them surprised and excited knowing they can have a healthy beautiful lawn without damaging the environment.
