Fall is usually a time for people to take stock of their lawn and garden areas and clean things up. Rake out the weeds, leaves, and debris from the year and any plants that have died. A time to prepare for the next growing season and the next year.fall mistakes.jpg While there is a lot that can be done that largely benefits your property this fall, there are some mistakes that many people make every year. Let’s take a look at the most common fall lawn mistakes so you can avoid making them this year.

Choosing The Wrong Fertilizer

There are so many things to remember when it comes to fertilizers. What do all these numbers mean? What does my lawn really need? Is it safe for pets and children? The best option when it comes to choosing a fertilizer is to really research the best types using the internet, or talking to lawn care professionals in your area. They will be able to direct you to the best types, those that are safe for your family and the environment, and also the ones that are the correct choice for a fall application. Using fertilizer that isn’t meant for fall can cause problems with your grass. Take the time to find the right one, or hire a professional to take care of it for you.

Leaves And Debris Covering Your Lawn

Whatever it is that is covering your lawn is preventing sunshine from reaching those little grass plants. This will eventually kill off your grass because grass needs the sun to survive. Commonly leaves are falling and piling up on people’s lawns at this time of year. This is fine, but it needs to be attended to regularly as leaving them on your lawn for too long will prevent the sun from reaching the plants. Those that choose to mulch their leaves and let them remain on their lawn to act as a fertilizer need to do so carefully. The leaves must be mulched into small enough pieces that they will make their way down to the soil, not remain on top of the grass.

Waiting Until Spring To Deal With Weeds And Thinning Spots

Spring isn’t necessarily the proper time to deal with all the lawn problems that started popping up this summer. Dead spots or thinning areas of your lawn can be overseeded this fall to help new growth be ready for next year. Dandelions are another thing that should be treated in the fall in preparation for next year. Use a weed killer designed to kill them during autumn in order to have a dandelion free lawn next year.
