When it comes time to grow or put together a lawn in Atlanta, Georgia, you have two basic options, seed or sod. While sod is more like an instant finish, it is more labor intensive to lay down and you still have wait time while the sod settles and takes root beforedark-green-1867188_1920.jpg you can really play on the lawn. Seed is a less expensive option for those that are watching their wallets, but you have a longer wait time for a lawn to play on as it has to grow from a seed.

If you have decided to go with seed and want to plant your own lawn, there are a few more decisions for you to make. What kind of seed do you want to purchase? You will need to think about climate and rainfall, as well as the other characteristics you are looking for in your lawn. There are some pretty cool improvements in grass seeds, like those that are engineered to be resistant to certain diseases and other problems that may be common to your areas. This information is available to you on the internet but you can also utilize your local lawn care companies and ask them questions pertaining to your local area. Kentucky-Bluegrass

This is a pretty popular grass option and it is known for its blue-green color. It is a cool season grass so best suited for areas in the northern states or the northern areas of the transition zone. This grass does most of its growing during the spring and fall and will go dormant during the summer and winter. This seed type does particularly well when grown in a mixture with other seeds, but can also be grown alone. Typically, Kentucky-Bluegrass is a low-maintenance option and is usually not very expensive to purchase seed for.

Zoysia

If you are a bit farther down the transition zone or in the southern, warmer states, you may want to check out the zoysia seed that is available. This grass is typically a medium green color to a deep green color. It has a dormancy period from about mid-fall until about mid-spring. This grass has a high tolerance to heat but will grow slowly. This grass also grows a dense surface mat that is helpful for discouraging weeds and crabgrass from growing. Spring and summer are the best times to sow this grass seed and will benefit from proper fertilizing.
