Still thinking about seeding your lawn? We put together a helpful second part to our blog on grass seeds to help you find the best option for you. It is also important to remember, many seed bags you are likely to get aren’t all one type of seed, they usually come in mixes with two or more types of seeds in them.greenfeetgrass-111553_1920.jpg This allows you to utilize the best characteristics of each type of seed, while still getting the overall look you want. Some grass seeds establish more quickly than others, some are more resistant to diseases, and some can withstand more heat and drought without losing their color. If you have questions about mixtures, be sure to talk with your local lawn experts!

If Kentucky-Bluegrass or Zoysia weren’t quite what you were looking for in our last post, read on for a quick and simple guide to other great grass seed types.

Fescue Grass

There are so many different types of fescue grasses that you can pretty much find what you are looking for in this variety. Typically this type of grass is going to be inexpensive to put in, and doesn’t require intensive care once established. Mowing and regular watering are the two most important routine things you will have to do. One nice thing about fescue is that it is going to stay green during colder times and it does just fine in areas that have lots of shade. Fescue does tend to thin over time and will benefit from overseeding in order to get the thickness and coverage that you may lose over the years.

Bermuda Grass

If you live further down than the transition zone, you may be interested in looking for a warm season grass which grows best while the weather is warmer. Bermuda grass may be just the thing you are looking for! Known for its tolerance to heat and to drought, Bermuda grass makes an excellent choice for southern lawns! This grass is even commonly used for golf courses because it is quite beautiful in color and texture. During the cooler months Bermuda grass will become dormant and remain so until the weather warms up again.

St. Augustine Grass

Another warm season grass, St. Augustine grass is suited to warmer climates such as the southern states. This grass is easy to grow from seed, grows a thick and coarse grass, but is susceptible to some diseases and insects in the southern regions such as the chinch bug. It is also necessary to own a powered mower as the thick grass is too tough to mow otherwise.
