Find me on:

There are many people that bag their clippings whenever they mow their lawn. It is made easy to do with the lawn mowers on the market today. Simple drive it around at the set height and the clippings are nicely bagged up and readylawn-mower-2127637_1920.jpg for disposal when you finish. The thing is that, it isn’t always necessary, or good for, your lawn to remove the clippings and dispose of them elsewhere.

Homeowners are often worried about leaving grass clippings on their yard because they believe that doing so will add to the layer of thatch that is developing in their lawn. Thatch isn’t going to be negatively impacted by leaving your grass clippings on your lawn when you mow, as long as you are mowing regularly and aren’t clipping off several inches at a time to leave on the lawn. You should only be mowing about one third of the grass blade off each time you mow.

The grass clippings are good for the lawn and soil because it returns nutrients such as nitrogen to the soil for the grass to use again. Grass clippings contain a lot of water so they aren’t going to take long to disintegrate back into the soil.

How do I mow?

Some homeowners are aware it can be good for their lawn to recycle the lawn clippings to the ground but aren’t a fan of how it looks when the clippings are allowed to blow over the lawn while mowing. The clumps can be unsightly, but there are ways to lessen the negative aesthetic impact while still receiving the benefits of not bagging your clippings.

Is Your Mower Mowing Correctly?

Make sure you mow when the grass is dry, as wet grass tends to clump together more. Make sure to mow on a schedule that way you aren’t mowing off more than an inch or so when you intend to leave the clippings on the lawn. Doing these things lessen the impact on the property image clippings may have when left on the lawn.

So, when should you not be bagging these clippings if they do so much good? If you have any type of disease in your lawn, do not leave the clippings on the grass as this can spread the disease more quickly throughout the lawn. If you do have areas that are affected by a disease, always make sure to mow these areas last and to make sure to properly dispose of the diseased clippings.
