Not A Lot to Do With Fescue in May in Alpharetta, GA

If you have a cool season grass lawn like tall fescue, it’s about time to give it a break when it comes to lawn care. Really, the only things left to do are aerate and apply post-emergent grassy weed control. Everything else is best left for different times of the year.

What is Tall Fescue?

Tall fescue is a cool season grass, which means its active growing season is in the cool parts of spring and fall. It is heat and shade tolerant, and it is a popular grass for the northern regions of Georgia where there are cooler winter and summer temperatures. This area is known as a transition zone, and it is great for some cool season grasses. Because tall fescue is more tolerant of high and low temperatures, it is your best bet for getting green grass year-round.

What Can You Do with Tall Fescue in May

It isn’t too late to aerate if you haven’t done it already. Technically, the past couple months were better, but you can still get away with it. Aeration is the process of poking holes into your soil and removing plugs from it in order to reduce compaction. This allows your grass to get air, water, and nutrients better. The end result is much healthier grass. The process takes a couple weeks for the grass to repair itself, which is why you want to do it before the warm weather slows the grass growth.

You can also apply lime basically any time of the year. It takes time for the soil to break down lime and adjust the pH of your lawn. In this respect, it is good to apply dolomitic lime as soon as you discover you have a low pH, but winter months are technically the best times for it.

Lastly, you can apply post-emergent herbicides in May. It is too late for pre-emergent herbicides. Most weeds that will occur over the summer have already germinated. However, a good application of post-emergent herbicide can kill a good amount of grassy and broadleaf weeds.

Enjoy Your Tall Fescue Lawn in May

When your grass is dormant in the dead of summer, it isn’t the best time to play games or participate in other high-traffic activities that can stress your lawn. Now, while it is still growing fairly well, is a great time to get out there and enjoy your lawn when you get a sunny day.
