The 3 Main Benefits of having Earthworms in Your Lawn in Atlanta, GA

Posted by Abigail Nannenhorn on Mar 4, 2016 7:00:00 AM

The sight of an earthworm wriggling about in local Alpharetta grasses and soil is very common. You may have seen them at your local park, or even in your own yard. But before you get too squeamish, I’m here to remind wormy.pngyou that these earthworms aren’t so much as pests as they may seem.

You might be thinking, however: Worms? How could there be anything beneficial about something so creepy-crawly?

  1. Earthworms are natural composters.

When these creatures travel throughout your yard, they consume organic matter lying in the soil. The earthworm eats things like decaying plants, grass, and leaves, animal feces, and leftover bits of soil. They absorb the organic matter, mix it with enzymes found in their digestive tract and digestive juices, and then gracefully return it to the soil.

  1. They help your soil breathe!

While these worms navigate your lawn, they leave a system of tunnels behind. These tunnels help aerate your lawn, producing pockets of air. These tunnels and pockets of air ensure things like oxygen and water can travel more easily to your grass’ roots so that your grass may grow and develop.

  1. Earthworms are happy to give out some nutrients where they are needed.

Earthworms line the tunnels that they create with their digested waste as they move on through the soil providing your lawn with nutrients. This behavior creates something called humus, a type of compost, which can benefit the structure of your yards soil and also offer it nutrients.
