So how can you get your own kids to fall in the latter category? We thought you might enjoy some tips to try to help you out.

Encourage Them When They are Young

Little kids love helping out and learning new things. Most four and five year olds enjoy helping parents with chores such as loading the dishwasher and sweeping, so utilize this and teach them how to help with the yard work as well. Obviously, there are some tasks that will not be appropriate for such young children, but they can help with other outdoor maintenance. You might ask them to help you pick sticks up off the lawn or rake up some leaves.

Make Yard Work a Family Endeavor

Try to make yard work something that the family does together. Have every member pitch in where they can. Kids can practice working together or on their own to accomplish tasks. This can help teach children how to work hard and also how to work together. Life lessons from an early age can be incredibly beneficial.

Plus, when you work together as a family, you can increase relationships and have time to talk to one another. This can be great as the kids get older and have more going on in their lives.

Talk About Yard Work in a Positive Manner

A lot of people dread mowing the lawn or doing yard work, and this is something that you can pass on to your children if you aren’t careful how you talk about things. Try to have a positive attitude and make it something that your kids don’t hate or dread to do. Do what you can to make it a positive experience, and maybe a fun one sometimes. Of course, you can do this by jumping in the piles of leaves or letting them make things out of the trimmed branches from the trees.

Let Your Kids Have More Power as They Get Older

It can be hard to let your kids grow up, but you have to realize they are going to get older. Let your teenagers have the duty of mowing the lawn with the riding lawn mower to give them a bigger sense of control and power. (Be sure to supervise as necessary.) Giving them these responsibilities can help keep them engaged in the yard work that needs done.
