rootsuckersSo you put all this effort into getting your landscape in order in your Alpharetta, GA yard. Maybe you added some flowerbeds or some pretty rocks to give your property a bit more appeal, or maybe you just brightened up what you already had. Simply planting some new flowers and shuffling around your lawn and garden decor can give you something entirely new. In line with taking care of your landscape, we wanted to talk today a bit about something called root suckers.

Have you ever heard of something called a root sucker? Sounds like something that you definitely don’t want in your yard, right? Cue the night terrors of monsters living in the soil eating the roots of your well established ornamental trees. The good news it that this is not the case at all. In fact, root suckers are not even an animal or an insect, they come from the tree itself. You likely have even seen root suckers at some point in your life. We can hope it was not in your own yard though! Root suckers are those sprouts that an ornamental tree sends up near the trunk. They are also known as root sprouts, which makes a bit more sense, because they are little sprouts that the tree sends up.

So why do trees make these root suckers or these root sprouts? Essentially, when a trees roots or trunk is damaged, the tree sends out hormones in order to seal up the wound. These hormones are also responsible for sending up new sprouts, hence the root suckers.

What things damage a tree to this extent? Most often the culprit is lawn care equipment like lawn mowers or weed eaters. When you mow too close or cut the weeds so close to the tree that it rips into the tree itself, or an exposed root, you set this process in motion.

Do your best not to mow too close to the tree or do anything that will damage the roots or trunk. If it helps, you can use pavers markers to help you stay far enough from the tree to prevent doing any damage. Sometimes it is just really helpful to make a barrier between the tree and the rest of the lawn to keep it protected.
