When you have a very wet spring, drainage problems in your lawn become apparent. Soupy spots or waterlogged lawns are unattractive, annoying, and they can kill your grass if it is submerged for too long. You can solve drainage problems in your lawn in multiple ways.

1. Rain Garden:

If you want to plant a garden that reduces irrigation demand, a rain garden is the perfect thing to create. It is basically a garden planted in the low spot of your lawn, or at the bottom of a slope. Due to its location and chosen soil components meant to act as a drain field, a rain garden diverts water to your plants but also absorbs extra runoff to keep the rest of your lawn dry.

2. French Drain:

If you want your drainage efforts to remain invisible, a French drain is a good idea. Again, it is placed in the low spots on the property, or where you are having drainage problems. What a French drain does is create an underground drain field usually in the form of a tube with holes in it, but there are other ways they can be made. This drain field is placed a few feet under the top of the soil, and it greatly increases the absorption of the ground in this area of the lawn. People also use these drain fields to prevent basements from flooding.

3. Dry Creek Bed:

A dry creek bed is a bedrock trail that serves as a drain field but also a decorative piece in your lawn. The idea is similar to French drains and rain gardens, as it gives the water a place to go instead of ruining your lawn. The creek bed looks ornamental, but it is utilitarian and allows your lawn a place to dispel extra water.

4. Aerate:

One more thing you can do to improve the drainage in your lawn is to aerate! Aerating is basically removing plugs from your lawn to reduce compaction and improve air flow. This means water can seep into the ground instead of pooling on top. You want to aerate during your grass’s growing season, which changes depending on whether you have cool or warm season grasses.
