The Benefits of Hand Watering

Posted by Christine Crandall on Apr 5, 2020 9:47:56 PM

Watering the lawn is typically a chore for the homeowner. That is why so many people have invested in smart watering systems. These complex systems monitor the weather, and they turn on at optimal times to reduce the wasting of water. The high-tech nature of this has made watering the lawn an afterthought. The smart watering system takes care of it. Yet, you still see people moving sprinklers out in their front yard. Even more perplexing is the person outside watering their lawn with a hose. He or she will spend hours making sure every bit of their lawn gets a drink. Typically their lawns do look good. This might cause the smart irrigation system own to question the benefits of hand watering.

The Benefits of Hand Watering

You never see a person outside hand watering their lawn with a look of discontent. However, it seems odd. Automatic sprinkler systems are what everyone wants, right? This may not always be the case.

Psychological Benefits

Ask anyone who enjoys hand-watering their lawn and psychological benefits will likely be the first benefit they mention. Like gardening and other somewhat-monotonous lawn care activities, hand watering is relaxing. You stand fairly still moving a hose back and forth, and during this time, you appreciate a lot of smaller things. You may hear the birds sing or see families drive by. It is almost like you get to be an observer of life. It’s sort of like what people get out of sitting on a park bench and people-watching.

Secondarily, there is the psychological benefit of being outdoors when hand watering. The sunshine helps your body to use and store vitamin D and calcium. Your mood heightens. Humans have somewhat of a need to be outdoors and in the sunlight in order to avoid depression, and hand watering accomplishes this.

Many of the people you’ll see outdoors watering their lawns are older men, and this highlights the fact that it is an outdoor activity that can be done at any age. When you are no longer outside using a shovel or an ax (if you ever did), watering the lawn gives you a replacement outdoor activity.

It Has Useful Benefits Too

For the most part, you should be able to cover your lawn completely with an automatic, smart watering system, but many systems have a couple areas that don’t get wet. This is not the case with hand watering. You can, in fact, get into every nook and cranny in your lawn. If you have a small lawn with a lot of corners, hand watering may give you more complete coverage.

The Benefits Are Specific

While there are benefits to hand watering, they are few, and most people are still going to opt for automated systems and set-it-and-forget-it irrigation options. Hand watering is just another option, and some people get great joy from it.
