pestsSummer is approaching with rapidity. With this comes lots of fun activities and time spent enjoying the great outdoors, but it also comes with some responsibilities to your lawn. Summer is typically the time that we have to devote the most time to our lawns to keep them healthy and beautifully green. With the mowing, the watering, the weed spraying, and more, it would be a shame to lose your lawn to one of the many lawn nuisances that cause trouble in the summer. Here is a quick list of potential nuisances that you can watch out for to keep your lawn healthy and happy this summer!

Sod Webworm

A what? Yeah, a sod webworm is a real thing. These are the larvae of the sod webworm moth. They can do quite a bit of damage if left unchecked so it is wise to know what to watch out for. First, you can watch for the adult moths because if they are around, it is likely they are going to be producing larvae at some point because they typically have two or three generations every year. The eggs are laid in the grass at night, and hatch in only a short seven days. A sod webworm moth is a gray or tan looking moth that has something that looks sort of like it has two snouts. The larvae grow to about a one inch length and they are brown or green looking. They may seem to have dark spots along them as well.

Essentially, these webworms eat the grass blades of your lawn. They will chow down the entire stem which causes brown spots to start showing up on your lawn. Typically the damage that these little pests do happens rapidly. You may notice a lot of birds are hanging out in your lawn pecking away and scratching around because there are so many sod webworms for them to eat.

Moles and voles.

Another pest you definitely want to watch out for are moles and voles. These little animals dig tunnels all throughout your lawn. They pop up in little mounds around your yard, which is unsightly and upsetting to many homeowners. These guys can be tricky to get rid of. The best way to target these nuisances is to use a trap that allows you to take them far away from your yard and release them somewhere else. Preferably far from anyone's yard to be fair.
