This summer we had some harsh drought conditions and extreme heat. These399103_362996223750813_564910012_n1.jpg weather conditions can cause serious damage to a fescue lawn, now is the time to re-establish some grass in your lawn through Aeration and Seeding.

1. Make sure that you start the reseeding process between September 1st through October 15. If you choose to reseed past October 15, you run the risk of your newly seeded lawn not taking root because it didn’t have time to grow strong enough to survive the winter. Reseeding in the spring will work temporarily, most of the plants that germinated in the spring will die off during the summer.

2. Raking up any loose grass and thatch

3. Next, you need to aerate the soil. You can loosen up your soil with raking or you could rent an aerator to mechanically loosen up your soil

4. Make sure that the Fescue grass seed you choose works in the Atlanta area. A lot of Tall Fescue seed sold at the larger home improvement stores are generic blends and do not perform well in Atlanta.

5. Use a spreader to evenly plant grass seeds into the ground. You’ll use less seed and have more successful grass growth in the spring

6. Remember to apply fertilizer to your newly planted lawn. Fertilizer will help your grass plants to develop stronger and longer root systems—which increases the new grass’s survival rate over the winter months

7. Save yourself some time, and possibly extra expense, by hiring a professional lawn care service to reseed your lawn. They already have the equipment, will use the correct seed blend, and will be able to better instruct you on the proper amount of irrigation and fertilizer that is needed for your newly established grass.
