Water is essential for life-human, animal, and plant. Just like water keeps your body sprinkler-1209900_1920.jpghealthy, water is necessary to keep plants fed and hydrated. This includes your lawn! Especially in the drier and hot summer months it is important to keep a strict watering schedule to ensure your turf-grass has the moisture it needs for growing properly and staying green and healthy.

The Georgia heat during these upcoming summer months can be brutal to the health of your lawn if it isn’t receiving the proper levels of watering. When grass is not watered properly the plant is unable to continue the process of photosynthesis, leaving it without vital minerals, nutrients, and food. This will start to show in that your grass will begin to die as the plant is starved.

In order to avoid the death of your lawn, try to keep to a weekly schedule of watering your lawn. Different types of turf-grass may need slightly different levels of water so make sure you know what kind of grass you have in your lawn. Any questions you have can be happily answered by lawn care experts.

So how much water does your grass need? Following the guidelines for your specific turf-grass can make the difference in having a healthy, green lawn or struggling with brown spots or sparsely covered areas. Or if you would prefer to just see how your lawn is doing, a simple test you can use to see if your lawn is getting enough moisture can be done by using a screwdriver or thin piece of metal. Simply push the screwdriver or piece of metal down into the yard, if it goes about 4 to 6 inches into the soil without too much effort your yard is probably getting enough water. If it takes a lot of effort or doesn’t make it to at least 4 inches, your grass may be in need of a drink.

To keep it simple and in measurement terms, your lawn will probably need somewhere around an inch of water a week during seasons of less rainfall. During the really hot and dry summer months increase how much you water by another half inch or another inch. Using the screwdriver or thin piece of metal is a great way to judge how moisture-happy your lawn is.

One other important element of watering your lawn is timing. Early mornings is a great time to water your lawn as it isn’t too hot yet and the water won’t evaporate during the heat waves of the afternoon. If it is windy outside, it is best to wait as well. Having the wind blow the water away from where it is supposed to be watering does no good for your lawn.
