How To Winterize Your Underground Sprinkler System

If you have an underground sprinkler system you likely have been told that you need to winterize them as the colder temperatures take over. This is also commonly referred to as ‘blowing out’ your system, because that is essentially exactly sprinkler winterize.jpgwhat you are doing when you winterize the pipes. This helps to protect the pipes and equipment from freezing, cracking, and causing problems that you will have to fix later if you intend to use the system next spring and summer.

If you have a professional system they are equipped with some basic features that allow you to winterize your sprinkler system yourself, or you can have a company come and winterize your system. Depending on what you value the most, be that your time, money, or how well the job gets done, you can decide if you want to try doing it yourself or not. The good news is, if you want to give it a shot by yourself, it is a pretty simple procedure and with a few simple tools you can try it out.

You will need access to a air compressor to do the job efficiently. Make sure that you know how your system runs and remember, you are going to need to do it zone by zone as you are very unlikely to find an air compressor that is powerful enough to do your entire system at once. Plus, you have to be careful to know the correct psi for the type of pipes your system has so you don’t crack the pipes by trying to winterize the system.

Find a basic quick-connect coupling to hook your air compressor to your blow out port and turn off the back flow preventer on your system. Once these are turned off and you are hooked up with the air compressor you can begin blowing out each zone. Using the timer, set each zone to open up one at a time. The sprinkler heads will pop up and blow out the water in the lines. Only do this until the water stops coming out, you don’t want to overheat and melt the gears. Move on one zone at a time and then repeat if necessary.

If it sounds like a pain or you don’t have the proper tools, skill, or knowledge, it is best to leave the winterizing to the professionals or you might be repairing your system next spring anyways.
