Knowing when, how, the quantity and when not to water your lawn can be difficult to knowin Cumming, Georgia. It is wise to follow the9166219795_a4374232db_k.jpg instructions specific to the type of turfgrass you have but here are some general tips and rules to follow to maintain a happy, healthy lawn. This can be particularly helpful when you are starting to care for your first lawn or need some basic guidelines to start with.

How Much Water Does My Lawn Need?

It can be tempting for some to water your lawn every day for hours trying to keep it green and pretty, but this can actually be bad for the lawn. Overwatering can make your lawn more prone to developing pest problems and less resistant to disease and drought. Most turfgrasses need about  an inch of water every week to keep up active growth and stay a nice green color.

It can be very helpful to keep an eye on expected rainfall each week and allow mother nature to water your lawn. This helps to conserve water and avoid overwatering. If you are getting regular rain in your area you can skip a watering or two.

When Should I Water My Lawn?

Many people want to start watering their lawns the first few nice days of summer but it can actually be beneficial to the turfgrass to hold off for a while. This allows the roots to become stronger and spread deeper as the plants search for moisture.

Once you do begin watering your lawn you will want to keep a consistent schedule. You should not go back and forth on watering and make the grass go in and out of dormancy. If you are going to water throughout the hot days and high temperatures, water on the correct schedule. Make sure to water the turfgrass thoroughly so the water soaks down in the soil to the roots. Try to water somewhat infrequently because frequent, shallow waterings don’t help roots penetrate deep into the soil which provides protection for the grass plants. Typically water two times per week 30-40 minutes per area or zone will give you the proper amount of water.

It is best to water your lawn in the morning when the grass is still wet with dew. Watering during the day leads to evaporation and not evenly spread watering. Watering at night may increase chances of developing some lawn diseases unless nightly temperatures are at least above 60 degrees.
