If you are thinking about planting a lawn in Atlanta, it might be confusing andlawn-care-643556_1280.jpg frustrating trying to figure out what type of grass would be best for your yard.
There are so many questions about what grass grows the best? What grass doesn’t mind foot traffic? What grass needs the most care or the least care to stay green? One popular type of grass for southern yards is Bermudagrass. Bermudagrass is a top choice for even golf courses and athletic fields.

What makes Bermudagrass a good choice for Georgia lawns?

The defining qualities of Bermudagrass are that it is a warm season grass, it is drought resistant, it does the best in direct sunlight, and can withstand heavy foot-traffic without suffering too much. This grass allows for a wonderful ground coverage and it doesn’t require extensive amounts of watering to stay green. Common Bermudagrass is generally of a medium texture but there are hybrid versions of Bermudagrass that come have a fine texture.

Hybrid versions of Bermudagrass are typically more resistant to diseases and weeds. Hybrids can require more attention and care to keep them looking their best. This includes watering, mowing, fertilization, and aeration. There are also some varieties of Bermudagrasses that are more cold-resistant which can extend their preferred areas more north into slightly colder areas.

Bermudagrass is pervasive. It establishes a deep and extensive root system that makes it hard to remove once it has been established. You will need to take proper care of Bermudagrass and keep it under control as it can overtake flowerbeds and other areas if not correctly attended and maintained.

Proper mowing for Bermudagrass involves investing in a Reel mower instead of a traditional mower. This is because this grass type needs to be mowed at one or one and a half inches. This is very hard for traditional mowers to accomplish because if they hit a bump or dip in the yard they can get lopsided and end up hitting the soil on one side. This is not pretty in a yard and is also unhealthy for it.

As for watering, since Bermudagrass is pretty drought resistant it only really needs watering once or twice a week if it isn’t getting any rainfall. When you only water it only about once a week or so it actually encourages the grass to extend its roots deeper into the ground which makes it more drought resistant during the next drought.

The negatives of this type of grass are that it will, however, turn a shade of brown with in the fall and winter. It doesn’t do well in shady places, either.
