What nutrients exactly are we talking about here? What do the different nutrients do and why are they important? We thought it may be helpful to have a basic understanding of what your grass needs to grow into a healthy lawn so we put together a short explanation of what different nutrients do for your lawn and why they are important.

Nitrogen

This is one of the most well-known nutrient that lawns need to grow. It is said that nitrogen is needed to ‘green up the grass’ because nitrogen is incorporated into the leaf tissue as it is the basis for all proteins and DNA. Like all things, too much of a good thing is never a good thing. Using too much nitrogen in your lawn can kill off the grass or bring about nitrogen burn. Stick to the proper fertilizer amounts and schedule to keep things at the proper levels.

Phosphorous

One of the rockstars of the photosynthesis process, phosphorous plays a part in energy production and the development of of flower or fruit growth. Without enough phosphorous a plant doesn’t have the energy or ability to grow much fruit or even make seeds. A plant that is only getting limited amounts of phosphorous are likely producing deformed seeds.

Potassium

Still another macronutrient that plants, including grass, need to grow strong and healthy is potassium. This nutrient plays a part in cell division, sugar transfer and a host of other very important processes a plant goes through.

Healthy lawns start with the soil it is grown in, so don’t overlook one of the most important pieces to growing the best lawn ever.
