5 Common Mowing Mistakes

You probably think you know how to mow your lawn, but many people make common mistakes that reduce the quality of their turf growth. Here are 5 common mowing mistakes people make that wreak havoc on lawn beauty.

5 Common Mowing Mistakes

1. Dull Blade: If you are mowing with a dull blade, you won’t get an even cut. More problematic is that you won’t have a crisp cut. A dull blade will leave each blade of grass with a ragged edge. This makes the grass more susceptible to disease, and your lawn may develop a yellow haze from the dull, mutilated grass blade tips.

2. Mowing Wet Grass: You really should not mow when your lawn is wet. Not only is it messy because the cut grass seems to stick to everything, but it also can clog your mower. Possibly the worst result of mowing wet grass is the damage it can do to your soil, as the wheels tear into the moist ground.

3. Cutting Too Short: You really should only cut the top 1/3 of the grass blade, which means a neglected lawn may need to be mowed multiple times before reaching the desired length. Mow on a schedule to make sure your lawn stays as short as you want it, and ensure that the lawn is healthy because it hasn’t been mutilated.

4. Mulching: Mulching is not bad in most cases, but if you are cutting a significant amount of grass length, it may not have the desired effect. Long clippings and clumps of grass can create conditions where the healthy grass decays underneath. Only mulch if you are taking 1/3 of the grass blade, so you don’t end up harming your lawn.

5. Mowing the Same Direction: Mowing patterns into the lawn with a striping kit is beautiful, and even mowing a pattern without a striping kit can be visually appealing. Still, the direction needs to be changed each mowing, or your grass will start to grow in one specific direction.

Mowing Mistakes Are Fixable

If you are making any of the mistakes above, it is nothing to be ashamed of. You haven’t irreversibly harmed your lawn. However, changing your mowing habits to avoid these mistakes will result in a lawn that is thick, green, and enviable. The mistakes above are common, and they are easy to fix. Your lawn will look like it has professional lawn care services before you know it.
