If spring has been more of a deluge than a sunny emergence from winter, your lawn is probably soaked. Even lawns with decent drainage can become waterlogged if the rain continues for too long. If you have standing water, it is important that you remove it if you want your grass to live. However, if your lawn is just incredibly wet, there are some activities to avoid.

1. Mowing: Maybe the sun is finally shining, but until that grass is dry, you don’t want to get out the mower. First of all, your lawn mower doesn’t perform as well when the grass is wet. You’ll end up with clumps or cut grass that didn’t get properly blown into the bag, and the cut will be uneven because of moisture on the grass blades. Secondly, your lawn will be damaged from a mower when it is wet because the wheels will tear up the grass when it is on muddy ground. If your grass is wet, wait until it dries to mow.

2. Walking: Just like a mower can tear up the grass, so can your feet! Avoid walking, running, or playing on wet grass. Have you ever seen a football field after a game played in the rain? It’s a muddy mess, and your lawn will do the same thing. Even footsteps can cause impressions that can make a lawn become uneven.

3. Watering: If it is time to water your lawn when the rain hits, go ahead and stop watering. Some people go ahead and water when there’s a light sprinkling because they don’t think it will be enough. However, your lawn only needs one inch of water per week. Let the rain fall, and then adjust your watering to fit the remaining need. If you need help determining how much it has rained, invest in a rain gauge or make your own. Watering the lawn should be an efficient process in order to conserve fresh water. Lawns take up more water in the United States than agricultural crops, so conserving water is important.

4. Herbicide Application: If you are trying to get rid of weeds, many applications will be washed away by water and require a certain amount of dry-time in order to be effective. However, there are some herbicides that are applied with water. Read the label to figure out what type you have, so you won’t have to repeat your application.
