Clover Turf for Residential Lawn Bliss

Posted by Christine Crandall on Mar 20, 2020 1:59:29 PM

One overlooked option when choosing a lawn type is clover. Clover turf has some strong advantages, but many Americans consider it only a weed…something to be removed from a lawn. If you have children who will play in the lawn, clover will stain clothing more so than grass. Otherwise, it is a viable option that will lead to residential lawn bliss in many cases.

Reasons to Choose Clover Turf

1. Long Roots: Clover lawns are very drought-tolerant because they have long roots. If you are looking for alternative lawn options in order to conserve water, clover allows you to have this while still having a beautiful, green lawn.

2. Self-fertilizing: Clover collects nitrogen from the air in a process called nitrogen fixation. It then puts it into the ground. Not only does this mean that clover fertilizes itself, but it also improves your soil. If your soil conditions are already poor, this can make a lawn possible with less soil amendments.

3. Flowers: Clover does flower, and it attracts desirable insects like bees and butterflies. This is especially good in a world that is vulnerable to the loss of pollinators that are crucial for agriculture and natural ecosystems.

4. Pet-friendly: If you are tired of yellow spots in your lawn due to the call of nature, you won’t get that with a clover yard. You won’t see urine damage from your pet waste because clover can handle it.

5. Less Weeds: Clover is very competitive, and it is able to grow thick enough that it crowds out any would-be weed invaders. This reduces herbicide use and limits upkeep.

6. Less Mowing: You won’t be getting out your mower very often if you plant clover because it only grows 2-8 inches high. It’s difficult to imagine, but mowing is minimal with clover lawns.

7. Soft: Lastly, clover is cool and soft to the touch. Walking barefoot in a clover lawn is a completely different experience than walking in a grass lawn. It is almost magical.

We Love Grass, But Clover Is Good Too

Americans have an almost innate negative reaction to clover because we have manicured our grass lawns for so long. They are the expected norm, but clover has its benefits. Not only is it attractive and hearty, but it reduces the stress on the environment that lawn care can cause. Less herbicides, less pesticides, and less fertilizers are required to maintain it. Less work is required to manicure it. It’s hard to think of a world filled with clover lawns, but it has its advantages.
