Your lawn is perfectly manicured. Your turf looks luscious and healthy and the birds are chirping...and then out pops a dandelion head. Dandelions are a tough weed to control because they are so resistant and persistent.greenfeet dandelions.jpg Spring and summer are the times we start to see them try to take over our lawns as they pop out and begin stealing nutrients and water from the surrounding grass.

While your kids may enjoy the ‘pretty’ yellow flowers and the eventual seeding, parents and homeowners are not so thrilled about their emergence. In order to maintain your beautiful lawn, we put together some of the best ways to prevent or get rid of dandelions after they show up.

Use a pre-emergent herbicide that specifically targets broadleaf weeds from growing in your lawn. Granules are a great option if there are no signs of broadleaf weeds in your lawn yet, after you notice a few, it is better to use a spray. There are two types of spray typically used for broadleaf weeds. One that targets only the weed and ones that kill everything they come in contact with. Use each kind appropriately and as directed.

Dandelions that are in the middle of your lawn would be best to treat with a herbicide that only affects broadleaf weeds and not your grass. For dandelions and other broadleaf weeds that grow in cracks of the sidewalk or in your gravel driveway are fine to treat with non-selective variety herbicides.

It is a great idea to use a professional service to ensure a proper and complete application of herbicides. Prevention is a great way to keep weeds under control in your yard and garden. Green Feet is happy to give you an estimate on a high quality herbicide application. Call today!

After dandelions have grown in your lawn for some time and are no longer baby plants, they become more resistant to herbicides and may require other forms of removal. Hand digging is a very effective way to dispose of and control dandelions. There are specific dandelion removing tools you can purchase for those few weeds that make it through the other forms of prevention. When hand digging out dandelions, remember that it is very important to remove the entire taproot. If you don’t remove the entire thing, they can grow back from what is left of the root.
