It can be very disheartening to see your fescue lawn in Marietta, GeorgiaIMG_9854.jpg attacked and riddled with disease after all the hard work you put into caring for it. Large circular brown spots and patches can be a signal that your lawn has a disease.
When we are talking about cool-season grasses, like tall-fescue, the fungi Rhizoctonia solani may often the culprit.

This type of fungus has many different strains that can attack different types of grasses and not even warm-season grasses are safe. Currently, there are not fully resistant grasses to this kind of disease. Disease is likely to develop in your lawn when the temperatures during the day are high, near ninety degrees Fahrenheit and the nights stay at temperatures of sixty or higher. Living in a humid region also adds to the likelihood of your grass developing some type of fungi problem as it increases the amount of time the grass blades are wet.

Brown Patch presents itself in a few ways that may be easy to confuse with other types of lawn diseases. You may notice brown spots in the yard that are usually circular but can merge together or develop in a not-so-circular fashion. These spots can appear to be thinned and sparsely populated by grass. At times the center of the circle can actually recover which gives the spot a donut shape.

Common Disease That Infect Your Lawn

The best way to fight Brown Patch and other lawn diseases is by prevention. Prevention means following a good lawn care schedule and routine. Make sure to water your grass appropriately and at the best times to allow the grass to have time that is dry during the day. Find out the best height to keep your grass mowed at and set your lawn mower to that height. Make sure to keep a good schedule for mowing, as well.IMG_9496.jpg

It is also very important to note that the over-application and use of nitrogen fertilizers can lead to lawns developing disease such as Brown Patch. Periodically, check the pH level of your soil to make sure it is in a healthy range for the type of grass you have and the other plants you have in the yard.

Fungicides and lawn sprays can be somewhat helpful in preventing the appearance of diseases but should not be relied on completely. Applied correctly, fungicides can help the appearance and health of your lawn but are not guaranteed to prevent diseases such as Brown Patch.
