It’s Almost Time For Your Veggie Garden in Canton, GA!

Lawn care often goes hand-in-hand with gardening, and if you are as excited about your vegetable garden as you are spring green-up, then it’s time to get started! It may not be time to actually plant your seeds yet, but it’s time to prep.

How to Prep Your Veggie Garden in March

If you are planting a very large garden, you may want to treat your own seeds with pesticides or fungicides in order to save money.

For the average gardener it is easier to buy pre-treated seeds. This prevents the seeds from rotting once they are in the soil. You can buy organic seeds to support organic farmers, but they too may have been exposed to organic chemicals that can also be harmful. Basically, now is the time to go down to your nursery and decide what you want to put in your veggie garden.

Hold Up, What About Planning!

Some people plan their garden only to have to go back and re-plan once they find more seeds they want to purchase. We recommend planning as a second step in the gardening process because then you actually know what seeds you have. Make sure you properly space plants in your plan in order to leave room for growth. And yes, we mean a written plan. Gardens always turn out better with the plans in-hand instead of in-head.

Prepping the Ground

You can also get your rows and mounds ready. Add mulch in between rows to keep the weeds down. This prep can be done at any time prior to your initial planting, and doing it beforehand ensures that it is done thoroughly. It also makes planting a breeze when the time comes.

Seeding Herbs

Depending on the herbs or tomatoes that you want to grow, it is prudent to start these seedling indoors or in a greenhouse now if you have the ability. Then, they’ll be ready to go into the ground in April when the ground temperatures are warmer.

Add Some Fun Early On

Your garden won’t look like much now unless you have some second plantings going like onions or radishes. That is why it is important to invest in something fun for your garden early on to get your “gardening bug” going. If your budget is tight, invest in a new pair of gloves or a new hand trowel. If you want to go bigger, get some décor for your garden. It is time to get out there and start prepping if you want to be ready for April.
