Flowerbeds aren’t immune from these potential problems, either. One way to combat and prevent these little critters is to stock up on a cocktail of chemicals and sprays that are potentially harmful to you and your family, not to mention the environment, or you can check out more natural ways.

To help prevent bugs or insects from taking over your plants, you can actually use water as your main weapon. By regularly spraying your plants (leaf undersides, as well) you can knock the pests off your plants making it easier for them to take up residence somewhere else. This also allows more beneficial bugs to move in and start helping the plants. Attracting beneficial insects, particularly ones that prey on the bad ones, is a great natural way of fighting off insects.

If you feel you need a bit more power when it comes to what you are using, you can try a simple mixture of natural liquid dish soap and water. Spray this diluted mixture over your plants to help repel bugs and even kill them off. The soap will definitely help if you have a more persistent bug problem than using water alone.

If you are having problems with creepy crawlies that slink around your yard and garden causing problems for your plants, try adding some deterrents to the soil. Making the terrain dangerous or less favorable can keep slugs and other bugs from getting to your plants. A great way to do this is to use crushed eggshells around the base of your plants. If getting to that plant is too difficult, the creepy little guys will go somewhere less difficult to get to.

Another natural way to prevent unwanted pests from causing issues for your plants is to use plants that naturally repel bugs. There are a lot of great herbs you can purchase or grow yourself that give off an aroma that bugs don’t like and tend to stay away from. Mint is a wonderful example. Plant small pots of mint to place next to flowers or vegetables that are having problems with bugs to help keep them pest free.

While it can be tempting to go straight for the harsh chemicals that will kill insects, it is better to try some natural remedies first. For one, you aren’t introducing all those chemicals to the soil and the plants, who wants to eat a chemical filled tomato? Another benefit is that you won’t be killing off the beneficial bugs that do good things for your lawn and garden.
