Keeping your property looking crisp and cared for doesn’t only mean watering the yard and weeding the flower beds. Sometimes you want to finish up your total look with some potted plants on the deck, porch, or along the house orgreenfeet flower pot.jpg walkways. Basic care for these types of plants can be a bit difficult for some people, to ensure the longevity of your sprouts, follow these tips!

Preparation

Being prepared with the right tools and products is the first step in successfully growing and caring for plants in pots. You first get to go shopping for the pots that you will be using for the plants or flowers. (Have where you are going to place them in mind when you go.) Make sure there are holes in the bottom of the pot to allow for adequate drainage. If your pot doesn’t allow for draining your plant’s roots can rot and the plant can drown.

After you have the pot, you need the soil. Visit your local lawn and garden center to get advice and a large selection of potting soil to use for your pots. Do not use your soil from the backyard, it may have fungi, bugs, or weed seeds in it that will harm your new plants. It is a good idea to know what plants you will be planting and buy soil that has the proper level of nutrients for that plant.

Placement and Planting

If you are using large containers you will want to place them where they will go before filling them with soil. Put some large rocks in the bottom to allow for better drainage and to keep the soil from just falling out the draining holes.

Fill the pot with soil and remove the plant from its nursery pot. Be gentle and do not pull on the stem during the removal. Place the plant in the soil and lightly pack the soil around its roots. Water the plant thoroughly, without over-watering it, to help prevent transplant shock.

Aftercare

You will want to follow watering instructions for the soil and plant type you have purchased. Take note of temperatures and how much sun the plant needs. Do not place a plant that needs little sun in a spot that is sunny all day long or vice versa. Continue to check on the plants, water them, pull out any weeds, and remove any threats from the vicinity.
